Mwigulu Nchemba’s Contribution to ELCT-NED Praised

Adeladius Makwega – MBAGALA

Mwanakwetu commends the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, for participating in and supporting a fundraising campaign that raised more than TZS 1.06 billion to improve healthcare, education, services for people with disabilities, support for children living in vulnerable circumstances, and diaconal activities of the Eastern and Coastal Diocese (ELCT-NED).

The fundraising event, held on October 5, 2026, demonstrates how cooperation between the Government, religious institutions and the wider community can contribute to reaching people who need essential services and support.

These services are not only important to the Church. They play a broader role in building a society founded on human dignity, compassion, solidarity and care for vulnerable people.

We congratulate the Honourable Prime Minister for supporting initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Tanzanians.

When every stakeholder contributes to a cause that directly touches people's lives, the value of that contribution extends beyond an individual or institution and benefits society as a whole.

The Church’s Contribution to Society

Mwanakwetu highlights this development while recognizing the longstanding contribution of the Eastern and Coastal Diocese (NED) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) in providing various services to Tanzanians, particularly in the Tanga Region and other areas where its services reach the wider population.

The Church has played an important role in providing education, healthcare and other social services, regardless of the religious background of those seeking assistance.

For example, Mlalo Health Centre and Bumbuli Hospital are among the institutions associated with the Church’s services. However, the services they provide benefit the wider community without religious discrimination. In some areas, government employees have also worked alongside these institutions to strengthen service delivery through various programmes and agreements.

These are only part of the Church’s broader contribution, as it operates and supports a number of other projects and service centres serving communities in different sectors.

Respect for Non-Discriminatory Services

Mwanakwetu recognizes and respects the contribution of ELCT-NED to the people of Tanga and to Tanzanians who travel to the region for various activities.

When a person needs healthcare, education or another essential social service, what matters most is human dignity and the individual’s need—not religious differences.

From this perspective, the Prime Minister’s participation in the fundraising campaign can also be seen as support for social initiatives aimed at reaching people with various needs.

It reminds us that community development cannot be achieved by the Government alone, nor by religious institutions alone. It requires cooperation among the Government, religious institutions, organizations, the business community and citizens themselves.

Therefore, with great respect, Mwanakwetu says:

“Congratulations, Honourable Prime Minister! Congratulations for supporting services that touch the lives of Tanzanians. Congratulations for recognizing the important role of religious institutions in providing social services. Above all, congratulations for demonstrating that whenever the goal is to serve humanity, cooperation and solidarity should be at the heart of our efforts.”

A united Tanzania is a Tanzania that cares for everyone.
