President’s Office, Department of Archives and Records
September 6, 2026, was a special day for Phinias Mayengo, a young man from Bwai Village in Musoma Rural District, Mara Region. After graduating from the National Institute of Transport (NIT) in Dar es Salaam, he began a new chapter in his life by securing his first job at the President’s Office, Department of Archives and Records, where he has been appointed as a Supplies Officer.
For Mayengo, the job is more than just employment; it is an opportunity to put his education and skills into practice while serving Tanzania.
“This is my first job, and I thank God very much. I will work hard and dedicate myself fully to serving my fellow Tanzanians,” he says.
His story reflects a major challenge facing many young Tanzanians: finding employment after completing their studies. As the number of young people continues to grow, so does the demand for employment opportunities, making it necessary for the Government, the private sector and other stakeholders to work together in finding sustainable solutions.
Mayengo secured his position through a recruitment process coordinated by the Public Service Recruitment Secretariat, which oversees various stages of public-sector recruitment, from advertising vacancies and receiving applications through the Ajira Portal to screening applicants and conducting interviews. Successful candidates then proceed with employment procedures within the respective institutions.
The Head of the Supplies and Procurement Unit at the President’s Office, Department of Archives and Records, Agusteno Swai, said on September 7, 2026, that he had received Mayengo and assigned him his duties. “Mr. Mayengo performed his first official duty on September 6, 2026,” Swai said.
From Bwai to Dodoma, Mayengo’s story is an example of a young Tanzanian whose education has met opportunity. It is a story that reminds us that behind every job is a young person with a dream and a family hoping to see that dream become a reality. At the same time, alongside Government employment, the private sector, entrepreneurship and investment remain essential in creating more opportunities for the growing number of young people entering the labour market every year.
The ministry responsible for employment matters in Tanzania is led by Permanent Secretary Juma Seleiman Mkomi, while Ridhiwani Kikwete serves as the Minister.
