“Have you ever eaten vegetables
cooked with coconut?Have you ever applied oil made from coconut?
Have you ever used anything made from the coconut palm?”
Indeed, among ten people, it would be difficult to find even one who has never used something obtained from the coconut tree or its fruit.
Among those ten, Mwanakwetu from Mbagala is certainly one of them.
I am sure that as you read this article, you have found yourself going back to those three questions. Take a moment to reflect, and then ask yourself: What is your answer?
Having reflected on those questions, Mwanakwetu, my dear reader, allow me to add one more thing:
“The coconut palm can be used to make various types of furniture. Its leaves are used for roofing houses, while its husks and pieces of the trunk can be used as firewood.”
🌴 But there is one special thing that Mwanakwetu remembers...
I remember when I was a child, a thick section of the coconut palm branch was one of our favourite toys. We would climb onto it and slide down from the hillside to the valley, filled with joy and endless laughter.
“These are the little things we, the children and grandchildren of coconut farmers, remember. Coconut is part of who we are. After all, our special ingredient for cooking is found up in the coconut palm! You who season your food with peanuts and sesame—can you compete with us? 😂”
That was the beauty of the coconut palm branch.
Not everything beautiful requires money. Sometimes, happiness hides in the simplest things we see every day—things that carry our childhood, memories, culture, and way of life.
🌴 Mwanakwetu, these are the memories I have recalled today, September 2, 2026—World Coconut Day.
World Coconut Day began to be observed in 2009, in recognition of the importance of coconut as a crop to countries that grow and produce it on a large scale.
And because our brothers and sisters in Mbagala, Kilwa, Mafia, and Mkuranga are among those with a strong tradition of coconut farming and are well-known for coconut production in Tanzania, Mwanakwetu has decided today to remember and celebrate this special day—World Coconut Day.
So, Mwanakwetu...

The coconut is not merely a fruit.
The coconut palm is not merely a tree.
It is food, oil, shade, firewood, raw material, employment, culture, and a treasure chest of memories from our lives.
