August 28, 2026, is Friday, an important day in the life of a Muslim, when worshippers gather in mosques for Jumu'ah (Friday Prayer)—an act of worship that emphasizes unity, devotion to Allah, and the strengthening of Islamic brotherhood.
To explore how Muslims observe this important day, Mwanakwetu spoke to several Muslims about which mosque they attend for Jumu'ah prayers and the importance they attach to this special act of worship.
The first to respond was Abubakari Mshamu, a Records Keeper at the President's Office, Department of Records and Archives.
“I pray at the Gaddafi Main Mosque in Dodoma. According to our schedule, the Friday prayer begins at 12:38 p.m., around the time of Dhuhr. You are most welcome, my friend.”
Mwanakwetu also spoke with Ms. Zawadi Taji, a writer and office administrator at the President's Office, Department of Records and Archives. She said:
“This Friday, I will be praying at Nunge Mosque in Dodoma. I invite you too, Mwanakwetu, so that we can pray together.”
For her part, Ms. Elizabeth Shemu, Chief Accountant at the President's Office, Department of Records and Archives, said:
“I always pray at Ilazo Mosque every Friday. You know, for us Muslims, prayer is extremely important. You may have many good deeds, but remembering and fearing Allah through prayer completes your devotion and strengthens your faith.”
In Islam, Salah (prayer) is one of the most important acts of worship and one of the pillars of the faith. Jumu'ah holds a special place in Islam because it brings Muslims together to listen to the Khutbah (sermon), remember Allah, and perform the prayer collectively.
Among the recommended acts of worship in Islam is fasting on Ayyam al-Bidh, known as the “White Days.” These are the 13th, 14th and 15th days of each Hijri lunar month. Fasting on these days is a Sunnah and is among the voluntary acts of worship recommended for Muslims who are able to observe it.
It is also important to note that the Islamic Hijri calendar is based on the lunar cycle and the sighting of the new moon. As a result, the beginning of an Islamic month may vary slightly from one location to another depending on the sighting of the moon.
Although these conversations were conducted mainly in Dodoma, Muslims in Dar es Salaam also observe Jumu'ah prayers at various mosques across the city.
For example, at Manyema Main Mosque, the Friday schedule indicates that the Adhan (call to prayer) is made at 12:00 p.m., followed by the Friday Khutbah at 12:30 p.m., while the two-rak'ah Jumu'ah prayer is performed at 01:00 p.m
.
For a Muslim, Friday is not simply another day of the week. It is an opportunity to return to Allah, listen to religious guidance, strengthen bonds of brotherhood, and worship with humility and sincerity.
